Rivers of Light first debuted at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park on February 17, 2019 as part of the massive expansion plans that also included Pandora – The World of Avatar. The show had missed its original debut of April 22, 2016 on its 18th Anniversary due to technical delays, and debuted months later to mixed reviews amongst guests. We personally enjoyed the original show, and felt it fit the theme and storytelling of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park beautifully. However not everyone felt the same way, so Disney set off to change the show to have more of a ‘mass appeal’ to a wide variety of Walt Disney World guests.
Rivers of Light: We are One was then announced as the reimagined version of the original show that would “weave the original musical score and familiar Disney themes to create a powerful arrangement.” Their goal was to stay true to the show’s original vision, but add more Disney themes to create more mass appeal. Disney describes the new show by the following on their website:
This Memorial Day Weekend, the next chapter of this spectacle will unfold with the launch of Rivers of Light: We Are One.
Anticipate additional stunning imagery and familiar animal characters from Disneynature films, along with a colorful tapestry of classic moments from Disney animation. The show will also weave the original musical score and familiar Disney themes to create a powerful arrangement that inspires and carries us through moments of discovery, fun, friendship, fear, love and family.
The new Rivers of Light: We Are One debuted a day early for Annual Passholders, and will open to the public on May 24 just in time for the Memorial Day Weekend. Our friends at Blog Mickey were able to attend the Annual Passholder preview, and have a full version of the show on YouTube. We will embed the video below for your viewing pleasure.
